ISO is the abbreviation for "Standard International Organization". This association was founded in 1946 to replace ISA. It's main aim has always been to develop standardization, establishing common regulations to govern the production and quality of manufactured items, in order to facilitate the international exchange of goods and services and mutual cooperation in the economic, cultural, scientific and technological fields. Italian national regulatory organisations such as the Italian UNI adhere to ISO, given the vast number of sectors in which its activity is carried on. ISO also counts many expert committees, whose members are elected when chosen by the associated national organisations. It is consulted by UNESCO, as well as by many specialised organisations within the UN and its headquarters are in Geneva.
